This Sunday will mark five years since the military re-took control in Myanmar in a coup that ousted elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The military celebrated the anniversary by declaring a sweeping win for their political party in a general election, widely denounced as a sham. Engaging with the military could legitimize their rule and undermine the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists. It risks alienating those who have fought against the coup and desire a complete removal of military influence.

The international community must increase sanctions on Myanmar's military leaders to pressure them into restoring democracy. Economic consequences can weaken their grip on power and encourage a return to civilian rule.
