By Andrew Gray BRUSSELS, May 4 (Reuters) - European nations have "gotten the message" from U.S. President Donald Trump and are now ensuring that agreements on the use of military bases are being implemented, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Monday. Trump has accused some NATO nations of not doing enough to support the United States in the Iran war. In a further sign of his discontent with European allies, the U.S. announced on Friday plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany

Trump's emphasis on NATO members increasing their defense spending encourages European nations to take greater responsibility for their own security. This shift could lead to a more balanced and self-sufficient European defense strategy, reducing reliance on U.S. military support.

It's important to consider whether the pressure from Trump is causing European nations to divert necessary resources from critical domestic issues to military spending, potentially harming their social programs and economic stability.

The withdrawal of U.S. troops from Germany reflects a broader trend of America prioritizing its own interests over collective security, which could destabilize Europe and diminish NATO's deterrence capabilities in the face of threats like Russia.
