What are the implications of officer-involved shootings for policy changes in law enforcement during Trump's second term?

There have been at least seven officer-involved shootings, two of them fatal, since President Trump surged Homeland Security agents in city-by-city operations in early 2025. The big picture: ICE's presence isn't welcomed in some of the cities where it's operating. Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey said ICE agents should "get the f*ck out" on Wednesday after an ICE officer fatally shot a woman in the city. Videos show the 37-year-old driver, Renee Nicole Good, was shot as she drove past immigration agents.Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told reporters Good was attempting "an act of domestic terrorism" and DHS assistant secretary Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement Good "weaponized her vehicle … in an attempt to kill the agents.""That is bullshit," Frey said in response. Below are other officer-involved shootings by DHS personnel over the past year, according to an Axios review of news clips and statements from the Department of Homeland Security. Dec. 24, 2025 Tiago Alexandre Sousa-Martins, of Portugal, was shot by DHS agents in Glen Burnie, Maryland while driving a van. DHS claimed he rammed law enforcement vehicles before attempting to run over agents. Fellow passenger Solomon Antonio Serrano-Esquivel, of El Salvador, was injured in the resulting crash. Nov. 3, 2025 Carlos Jimenez, a U.S. citizen, was shot in the shoulder by an immigration agent in Ontario, California, east of Los Angeles. Jimenez approached ICE officers to ask them to move away from a bus stop used by local school kids, his lawyers said to The New York Times. When an officer then approached his car with a tear gas canister, Jimenez quickly reversed. "An ICE officer, fearing for his life, fired defensive shots at the vehicle," DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin told the Times. Jimenez was then charged with assaulting of a federal officer.Oct. 29, 2025 During a traffic stop on I-17 in Phoenix, Arizona, ICE agents stopped Jose Garcia-Sorto, of Honduras. He pulled over but when agents approached

An American Pope on American Freedom

An American Pope on American Freedom “A country’s vitality is deeply tied to the value it affords to human life in every form and condition.” Accepting the National Constitution Center’s Liberty Medal on Friday, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the United States’s promise to uphold human dignity. The award, which “honors men and women of courage and conviction who strive to secure the blessings of liberty for people around the globe,” had already been presented in person to Leo at the Vatican in April...
