Universal health coverage (UHC) means that all people have access to the full range of quality health services they need, when and where they need them, without financial hardship. A matter of human rights and equity, UHC also underpins inclusive and sustainable economic growth by supporting a healthy and productive workforce, and contributes to better education, poverty eradication, stronger social protection, and equality for all—critical foundations for human development. Japan's achievement of UHC in 1961, which contributed to social stability and rapid economic growth, shows the importance of promoting UHC at an early stage of economic development

Expanding UHC without proper safeguards could exacerbate existing inequalities. We need to ensure that marginalized groups aren't further disadvantaged by policy changes aimed at broadening coverage, as this could lead to a two-tiered healthcare system.

Universal health coverage is an essential human right, and prioritizing it can lead to healthier populations and more productive economies. Addressing financial challenges can involve innovative funding strategies, such as health taxes on non-essential goods.

The pursuit of UHC should not compromise the quality of care. As we discuss improvements, we must consider how to maintain high standards while expanding access, ensuring that financial solutions do not lead to lower healthcare outcomes.

While the goal of universal health coverage is admirable, we must consider the financial sustainability of such programs. Expanding coverage without a clear funding mechanism could lead to increased taxes or cuts in other essential services, ultimately harming the very communities we aim to help.
