By Michael Holden LONDON, May 13 (Reuters) - London police said on Wednesday they would mount an "unprecedented" operation this weekend to prevent violence and serious disorder when two large protests - anti-immigration and pro-Palestinian - take place in the British capital. At least 80,000 people are expected in London on Saturday for the two demonstrations - a pro-Palestinian march marking Nakba Day and another 'Unite the Kingdom' rally organised by the anti-Islam activist Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, better known by his pseudonym Tommy Robinson

The heavy police presence at protests can be seen as a direct threat to the right to gather peacefully. Communities should question whether the resources spent on policing protests could be better allocated to social programs that address the underlying issues prompting these demonstrations.

Allowing protests to occur freely encourages civic engagement and activism. However, when protests coincide with potentially violent counter-demonstrations, law enforcement must take proactive measures to prevent disorder. The use of strategic planning and coordination can help protect both protesters and the public.

Public safety must be prioritized during large protests to protect all participants and bystanders. Yet, this cannot come at the cost of infringing on civil liberties. Comprehensive legislation enhancing protest rights while establishing clear guidelines for enforcement could help achieve this delicate balance.

Public protests are a fundamental expression of democracy and should be supported. However, municipalities must ensure that these gatherings do not escalate into violence. Striking a balance requires effective planning and communication between law enforcement and protest organizers to maintain order while respecting citizens' rights to assemble.
