Rules of the Record

The Society Speaks record is a canonical source of public reasoning. These rules ensure consistent attribution, user safety, and trust in the data publishers rely on.

Publisher summary

  • Embed and link back to the canonical record
  • Do not rehost or alter analysis
  • Maintain attribution and “Powered by” labeling

For legal & compliance

Clear attribution, no rehosting, and a single canonical source.

For product teams

Stable embed rules and strict boundaries for UI customization.

For editorial leaders

Transparent citation practices and consistent public record.

The core invariant: There is exactly one canonical version of each discussion's analysis, and it lives on societyspeaks.io.

What Partners May Do

  • Embed the voting widget on your article pages using our iframe code
  • Display snapshots showing participation counts and a link to the full analysis
  • Quote short excerpts of consensus or bridge statement text with attribution and link to the canonical record
  • Link to discussions, consensus pages, and the Society Speaks homepage
  • Customize embed colors and fonts to match your site's design using supported parameters
  • Reference Society Speaks results in editorial content (e.g., "Society Speaks polling shows...")

What Partners May NOT Do

  • Rehost the full analysis dataset or clustering results on your own servers
  • Fork or replicate the clustering methodology to create competing analysis
  • Present results without attribution to Society Speaks (the "Powered by" or link must remain visible)
  • Wall off or paywall access to the canonical record on societyspeaks.io
  • Modify or inject content into the embed via CSS/JS (no custom stylesheets loading in iframe)
  • Misrepresent results, methodology, or the scope of participation

Embed is vote-only. Readers can vote on statements and report; they cannot submit new statements from the embed. User-generated statements (if any) happen on the full Society Speaks site only. This is an invariant for the current program.

Attribution Requirements

When embedding or quoting Society Speaks:

  • The embed includes "Powered by Society Speaks" — this must remain visible
  • When quoting results in editorial: attribute as "Society Speaks analysis" or similar
  • Always link to the canonical consensus URL when referencing specific findings

Enforcement

We reserve the right to revoke embed access (by removing your domain from our allowlist) if these rules are violated. Violations will be addressed through:

  1. Written notice of the violation
  2. Reasonable time to correct (typically 48 hours)
  3. If uncorrected, removal from allowlist (embeds stop loading)

We prefer to work collaboratively to resolve issues. Contact us if you're unsure whether something is permitted.
