Running a consultation
Ask your own audience one question, and get a report that shows where they agree, disagree, are unsure or are split.
Writing your question
Ask one thing, the way you would ask it out loud. “How should we use next year’s surplus?” works. “What do you think about our strategy, culture and communications?” is three consultations.
The background box matters more than it looks. Paste the decision you face, the options being considered and anything already ruled out. It is used only to draft your statements; participants never see it.
Getting the statements right
Participants do not answer your question directly. They answer Agree, Disagree or Unsure to a set of short statements about it. We draft the set; you edit it and approve it.
- One idea each. If a statement joins two points with “and”, split it.
- Fair to both sides. Give people who favour a change something to agree with, and give sceptics something to agree with too.
- Never a question, and never about a named person.
- Ten to fifteen is about right. You need at least 5 to go live.
Once voting starts a statement cannot be reworded, because everyone must answer the same thing. You can withdraw a statement (its votes stop counting) or add a new one.
How results are called
Each statement gets one result, worked out from the votes on that statement alone. Percentages are of everyone who voted on it, including those who answered “unsure”.
- Agree, or disagree
- We can be confident that more than half of participants took that view, allowing for how many voted. Eighteen out of thirty is not enough; twenty-four out of thirty is.
- 不确定
- “Unsure” was the most common answer, by a clear margin.
- Split
- At least 35% agreed and at least 35% disagreed, and the two were within 15 points of each other. Being divided is different from not knowing.
- No clear result
- The votes lean one way, but not clearly enough to call. The report says which way.
- Too few votes to say
- Fewer than 10 people voted on the statement. You see the counts, and no conclusion is drawn.
The results describe the people who took part. They are not a poll of everyone you invited, or of the public, and the report says so.
If few people take part
Clear results usually need 30 or more participants. With fewer you still get a report: it shows the counts and explains why few results are called.
If turnout is low the day before closing, we email you a reminder to send and a link to keep the consultation open for longer. You can also reopen a closed consultation from its dashboard: the same link works again.
Statements from your audience
If you switch this on, people who finish can suggest a statement. Nothing they suggest is shown to anyone until you approve it.
Each suggestion is screened first. Abuse, and anything that names an individual, is rejected automatically. The rest waits in your queue with a note if screening was unsure, and we email you. You approve or reject; you cannot reword someone else’s statement.
Your report
The report is built when voting closes, and we email you. Only you can see it until you create a link to share it. You can stop sharing at any time.
Every figure in it is counted directly from the votes. The headline and the suggested next questions are written by AI from those results and checked by software so that they add no figures of their own. Suggested questions are labelled as suggestions: the report never tells you what you ought to do.
While voting is open you can build an interim report at any time. It is marked as interim.
Privacy and who can take part
Only people with your link can take part, and the consultation is never listed or searchable on Society Speaks. Anyone who has the link can forward it. If it goes somewhere it should not, create a new link from the share page: the old one stops working at once.
Participants need no account. Their answers are stored against a random ID on their device, not a name or email, and that ID is different for every consultation. You see results, never who answered what. The participant page carries no analytics or advertising scripts.
Your question, background and statements are sent to our AI provider to draft statements and write the report narrative. See our security page for the full list of providers. Security and data protection
Deleting a consultation removes its statements, every vote and its reports for good.
Paying, refunds and cancelling
Setting up is free. The first time you go live, a verified email gets 14 days with every feature and no card. After that, £99 for 30 days, or once a year for unlimited consultations. A pass covers every question you take live in those 30 days, and each question gets its own report. There is no charge per participant. Prices exclude VAT.
A 30-day pass you have paid for but not yet used can be refunded in full from “Plan and billing”, with one click. Once a consultation is open on that pass, it is not refundable. That includes a consultation you started on the trial and kept open with the pass. The annual plan can be cancelled there at any time and runs to the end of the year you have paid for. Invoices are in the same place.
The annual plan covers one organisation consulting its own audiences. It does not cover running consultations on behalf of clients.
When something goes wrong
- The statements were not drafted
- Drafting retries by itself. If it still fails, the page says so: press “Try drafting again”, or write the statements yourself. Nothing you typed is lost.
- The report is taking a while
- It normally takes under a minute. The page updates by itself and we email you. If it could not be built, the page offers “Try again”; your results are always on the dashboard and in the CSV download.
- A participant says the link does not work
- Check the consultation is live and that you have not created a new link since you shared it. A closed consultation shows participants a “voting has closed” page.
- I paid but the consultation is not live
- Open “Plan and billing”. Your payment appears there within a minute; then press “Go live” on the consultation. If you would rather not go ahead, refund it from the same page.
- I am not getting your emails
- Check your spam folder and add societyspeaks.io to your safe senders. Everything in the emails is also on your dashboard.
